Children are naturally curious. It’s this constant curiosity that leads them to explore the world around them. Unfortunately, in their ongoing mission of new discovery, children may encounter dangers that they aren’t yet equipped for. Drowning is among the most significant health and safety risks for young children. Of course, children aren’t aware of this risk when they are exploring new surroundings.
Survival swim lessons can help children navigate potentially dangerous situations in backyard pools, natural bodies of water, and anywhere else drowning is a possibility. If you’re thinking about booking swimming lessons to help your child be ready for any new environment, contact Aqua Baby Survival Swim School.
What is survival swim lessons?
Survival swimming is when one can have a controlled float in any depth of water. Learning to swim can reduce a child’s risk of accidental drowning by up to 88%. However, not all swim lessons focus specifically on survival skills. Survival swim lessons utilize a consistent, repetitive approach to teach children how to respond in an underwater emergency. Specifically, children will learn to float so that they’re able to breathe and remain calm until help arrives in the water. At the end of each lesson, children will also learn to exit the water on their own.
Survival swim lessons will challenge your child. However, they do take place in a warm and encouraging atmosphere where your child can feel safe. By building your child’s confidence in the water, these lessons can also help your child gain more overall confidence in him or herself.
Why should my child learn survival swimming skills?
Most parents don’t like to think about the many health and safety risks that can threaten their children. However, taking a proactive approach offers the best protection from future accidents. By investing in survival swimming lessons at a young age, you’ll prepare your child to stay safe in any environment. In Southern Arizona, where many homes have backyard pools and flash floods are common, water survival skills are essential for every young child.
At what age should survival swim lessons begin?
One of the most common questions about survival swim lessons is what age to start. Ideally, swimming lessons will start at a young age to promote comfort and confidence in the water. Between ages 1 and 3, children are the most curious and therefore the most vulnerable. Thus, these ages are ideal for learning survival swimming skills. For infants and toddlers, swim lessons will take place over a few short weeks. Skills will vary depending on the specific age of your child.
- Infants – Neither infants nor toddlers can hold their heads above water to breathe. So, survival swim lessons focus primarily on helping your child float at any depth of water. Children who are not yet able to walk will be taught to hold their breath underwater and roll to their back so they can safely float and breathe.
- Toddlers – For toddlers who are walking, swim lessons also focus on kicking and swimming, in addition to rolling on their backs to float and rest. With this skill set, toddlers may learn to navigate to the pool steps and exit the water on their own.
